College National Finals Rodeo Recap

Eleven members of the Cal Poly Rodeo Team competed in the 73rd annual College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming on June 12-18.

The Cal Poly women’s rodeo team dominated the region and qualified a strong team to compete at the national level. Sierra Spratt (Master’s in Agricultural Education, ’22) and child development major Aimee Davis won the All Around and Reserve All Around in the region, respectively. Both competed in goat tying and breakaway roping in the national competition and tied for fourth in goat tying. Gracely Speth (Master’s in Agriculture, ’22), finished with a sixth-place win in breakaway roping. Agricultural communication major Madison Camozzi performed well in barrel racing, placing fifteenth overall and seventh in the first round. Graduate student Tyree Cochrane qualified in breakaway roping and was selected to receive the Walt Garrison Award winner by the national board. The award recognizes a student who embodies the spirit of college rodeo. Hard work, leadership, tenacity, and comradery are among the traits she was recognized for.

The men’s team also had several standout students. Quintin McWhorter (Agricultural Systems Management, ’22), a regional champion Saddle Bronc rider, placed third overall in the national standings. Karson Mebane (Agricultural Systems Management, ’22) won second in the short round. Cole Tart (BioResource and Agricultural Engineering, ’22) won second place in bareback riding and competed strong at the national level. Tart is now pursuing a career as a naval officer and will continue to compete in California and military rodeos.
